I checked out the article and artwork by Gabriele Villa. I was pretty surprised by the subject matter that he painted in the mural. He is an excellent artist, but including Jesus Christ seemed a bad after thought. I’m not even sure I understand the skull or game he added to the Chicago undercover camera logos. This would tend to enrage the far- right and actually stifle dialog. The wall shouldn’t have been painted over. It was after all art. But this artist painting was far more than controversial. I wonder if the artist Gabriel Villa had any idea of the powder keg he lit with this unusual art piece. Alderman James Balcer was hasty in repainting the wall. This must have just killed Mr. Villa to see his masterpiece destroyed. He’s in good company. The famed Diego Rivera suffered a similar incident. It happen after he completed a huge mural in New York (with not so secret communist undertones). I think the wall was sledge hammered. Artists are free spirits. They have no idea how their provocative art can enrage the public.
